WAC has a unique operational methodology of reflection and action. The consultancies, Board workshops and seminars have continued to provide opportune moments to reflect over the past and plan for the future. This methodology of work also referred to as the review of life, ensures systematic, planned and orderly growth. It is out of this growth process that realization about the need for community organization as a new dimension of WAC was born. The overall objective of the initiative is to bring about a sense of community belonging and good neighbourliness among residents of Dandora. It is felt that unless a community feels sufficiently united and cohesive it can never hope to take any form of community action. Also true is the fact that a community that feels united and has confidence and self pride would not lend itself to manipulation, abuse or be taken advantage of. Community organization seeks to build a consciousness in the people of Dandora about the need to adopt community approach to address their needs, problems and concerns. And there are many of these that defy individual or family action. They include insecurity, solid (and liquid) waste disposal, lack of community recreational facilities, lack of health services and rampant violation of community rights. A number of strategies are applied to engage with the community. They include:
In Dandora there are other social problems that the community could be assisted to address. They include the multiplication of bars in residential areas with the attendant problem of influencing moral breakdown among the youth. Environmental degradation; no trees or grass anywhere - and also lack of a police station, Bank and Post office. Dandora being an area where over 80% of residents are tenants, there is need for the people to know their legal rights as tenants and thus avoid manipulation by the few persons who own houses. A legal expert has been identified and a number of seminars planned for the community. |
