Resource Centre volunteer
We are currently looking for a new volunteer to help maintain and develop our resource centre, with the support of our staff team, trustees and other volunteers.Overall, the volunteer will play an important role in ensuring our resource centre is a well managed space that is welcoming and user-friendly, which provides an effective service to our users.
Background to the resource centre
We have a wide range of resources in our centre which allows schools and individual members to purchase or borrow specialist resources on the following topics:
- Teaching packs linked to the National Curriculum on different countries, citizenship, sustainability, music from around the world, co-operative games, as well as artefacts from different countries which help bring learning alive.
- Poverty
- Global youth work
- Diversity awareness and challenging cultural stereotypes.
- Citizenship education
- World faiths
- Community Development including - getting people involved, roles and responsibilities in community groups, community gardening, setting up a food co-op, funding etc.

Resource Centre Volunteer Role Description: (November 2008)
Maintaining and developing a loan system:
- Reviewing and developing the loan system.
- Ensuring outstanding loans are chased up and outstanding resources not returned are invoiced.
- Helping creating a “user friendly” system for visitors and to enable staff and other volunteers take resources to schools.
- Training staff members in any revised system.
Sales of new resources:
- Monitoring the sale of stock and re-ordering purchases to maintain a minimum level of stock.
- Help to maintain resource lists in conjunction with other staff and volunteers.
- Looking for additional and new resources that support our work that we can offer on loan or for sale in the resource centre.
- Contributing to developing an improved system for pricing and monitoring of stock.
- Producing labels for resources that are for sale.
- Adding comments from staff on resources for sale stating why a particular resource is useful.
General tasks:
- Helping to ensure the resource centre is a tidy, welcoming space.
- Providing general support to teachers, staff and other resource centre users.
- Helping to create publicity materials for the resource centre, to help increase its use.
- Helping to maintain an appointment system for visitors to and respond to enquiries as appropriate.
Volunteer person specification
Essential:
- Good attention to detail
- Some skill and/or experience in developing systems
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- An interest and commitment towards international development, sustainable development, education or other global issues.
- Knowledge of IT systems.
Desirable:
- Library or similar information department work experience
- A recognised library or related information qualification
- Marketing experience
