As part of LGEC's 'Sustainable Skills' project, we are working with further education tutors to help them embed sustainable development into vocational courses. This page contains useful resources and links for FE tutors. We are now compiling resources for publication, which will all be available on this webpage by the end of January 2012.

  • "ESD IN POST-COMPULSORY INITIAL TEACHER EDUCATION" -- LGEC commissioned this research by Magnified Learning to review existing knowledge of sustainable development and development awareness issues in relation to further education.  
  • General sustainable development and further education resources

    • "Embedding sustainable development in the curriculum" (PDF, 401k) -- Created by the Learning and Skills Council and ESD Consulting, this guide is specifically for FE tutors interested in embedding sustainable development in their courses. The guide includes a helpful outline of steps to take, along with case studies from FE colleges throughout the UK.
    • "Creating the conditions for embedding sustainable development in the curriculum" (PDF, 416k) -- Is your college just beginning to address sustainable development? This document from the Learning and Skills Council and ESD Consulting will help you build support at your institution for embedding sustainable development in FE courses.
    • "Towards leadership for sustainability" (PDF, 2.5 MB) -- This document details the Centre for Excellence in Leadership's plan for promoting leadership at all levels in the FE system in order to embed sustainable development across every aspect of FE institutions.

    PROCUREMENT

    The EAUC has published some very useful factsheets Promoting Poverty Aware Procurement around 14 areas of procurement including banking, beauty, banking, beauty, beverages, cleaning, clothing, electronics, fruit, oil & gas, paper, plastics, seafood, steel, timber and vegetables.  The double-sided factsheets are available to doanload from EAUC's website [click here for link to EAUC website]

    Resources for Travel and Tourism tutors

    • "Tourism 2023" (PDF, 7.2 MB) -- From UK charity Forum on the Future, this report outlines four possible scenarios for the travel and tourism industry over the next 15 years, and calls on the industry to make sustainable development a cornerstone of industry practice. The report has been endorsed by tourism giants such as Thomas Cook, TUI Travel, British Airways, and ABTA.
    • "Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria" (PDF, 38k) -- From the Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism Criteria, the criteria "are an effort to come to a common understanding of sustainable tourism, and will be the minimum that any tourism business should aspire to reach."
    • "The Tourism Game" (PDF 50 KB) -- A role playing exercise to explore the costs and benefits of the development of a tourist industry. This game was written by Stephen Fairbrass for NEAD's ‘Just Business' project. The format is loosely based on NEAD's ‘Debt Game'. The game may be copied for educational use free of charge. ‘Just Business' would appreciate any evaluative feedback on the exercise, addressed to steve@nead.org.uk
    • "Paradise Found -Guiding Principles for a Sustainable Tourism Development" (PDF 5MB) Throughout 2008 and 2009, Forum for the Future engaged in an ambitious work plan around issues of sustainable tourism and travel. Paradise Found - a report focusing on sustainable destinations - is the first in a suite of projects that we are conducting with the leading players in the sector.
