Art students from Lancaster and Morecambe College were awarded prizes from Lancashire Global Education Centre for their art work promoting the Millennium Development Goals at an award ceremony on the 16th May 2011 at The Storey Creative Industries Centre in Lancaster. The competition was developed as part of The Sustainable Skills Project. Lancashire Global Education Centre ran the competition as part of our work with Lancaster & Morecambe College to embed sustainability into vocational courses.

25 students submitted entries for the competition and 9 designs were shortlisted for prizes. The entries were judged against their concept, visual impact, creative use of materials and communication of the message that poverty is an issue that everyone can act to alleviate.

1st prize - ‘Poverty Is Real' by Rebekah Kelly. The judges were very impressed with the colourful design made up of sections of text and with the message conveyed by the text ‘Poverty Is Real - Help fill in the spaces and do something about it'.

Art Course Tutor Jo Vincent said:
"The students were really enthused about this topic, which also developed their capacity to respond to a professional brief of work. The variety of designs showcases our students' technical abilities as well as their inventiveness in approach. Well done everyone who worked on this project."

Presenting the prizes, Helen Deacon, Director of Development (Learners and Curriculum) at Lancaster & Morecambe College said:
"Lancaster & Morecambe College is committed to being sustainable, which is as much about people and economics as it is about the environment. Through LGEC's competition our students explored one of the eight Millennium Development Goals. The work they produced is a credit to them and their course tutors."

The winning entry has been professionally printed for display in youth groups across Lancashire. All the entries are on display in ‘The Thomas Storey Exhibition Room', Ground Floor of The Storey Creative Industries Centre in Lancaster from 16th May - 5th June 2011.
